John was raised in North Yorkshire moving South in 1963 to go to Cambridge University where he read Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics. He gained his doctorate at Oxford University, Metallurgy Department. After a few years of post-doctoral research at Oxford he joined the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority to investigate structural defects in metal alloys used in the nuclear power industry. In later life he returned to academia as a Research Professor, first in Sheffield and finally back in Oxford University, until retirement. He is married to Elaine, has two daughters and two grandchildren, and during the last 60 years has lived in Oxford, Cassington and now Yarnton. His interests include walking, keeping fit, birdwatching, photography, water colour painting and watching rugby."
